I've Heard the Mermaids Singing is one of my favorite films. Luckily I found it at the library the other day and finally have the opportunity to view it once again with and without the director's commentary.

When I first saw this film, I related to Polly's awkward strivings for validation until I realized that Gabrielle and Mary do not supplicate themselves before the so-called "art world" any less--in the former's desire to be immortal and the latter's desire to be shown.
My identification with Polly has not lessened during the twenty years since I last viewed the film.
Polly is also an inspiration for this reason: she makes something every day. I cannot imagine sustaining myself on salary-making and relationships without the translation of art.
